When I heard that hardcore punk band The Bronx were doing an entire mariachi album, I had to see it for myself. I have always enjoyed mariachi music, my favorite classic being 'Besame Mucho' - preferably sung by Lt. Frank Drebin of Police Squad(Naked Gun 2 1/2). Long story short: the album, entitled "Mariachi El Bronx", is awesome. It really is a great collection of fun, catchy songs - run out and buy it now. But the question is, did Mariachi El Bronx suck live? No way.
The seven-piece band came out all smiles and wearing full mariachi outfits - they looked fantastic. "Slave Labor", which is my favorite song from their album, was the first songs they played. From those first few notes I knew we were in for a good show. Every one of the seven or so songs they played sounded fantastic - Mariachi El Bronx filled up Bowery Ballroom with their sound and positive energy. You could tell that the band really enjoyed what they were doing - they were laughing and joking between every song. Lead singer Matt Caughthran would dance around during guitar solos causing the rest of the band to crack up.
Even if they weren't an established hardcore punk band, I think the mariachi music of The Bronx could stand on its own - although I'm not sure if there is much demand for mariachi music these days. Mariachi El Bronx are an excellent live act that will certainly surprise you if you have not seen or heard them. If you have the CD, go see them live - you will not be disappointed.
